Jim Taylor

Jim Taylor has spent most of his life in the company of horses and a participated a variety of disciplines in the industry. His experience includes breeds like Thouroughbreds, Appaloosas, Paints, Arabians, and Quarter Horses. He began his journey trail riding and has participated in almost every western event offered in the show ring. Like most aspiring riders, Jim worked for many different trainers to learn all he could. He has trained, ridden, and shown in everything from western pleasure, trail, equitation, and rode stock horses with a hackamore and full bridles. His favorite events are reining and working cow horse winning consistently in each of these events in his younger days. Jim Taylor’s passion for saddle making came in 1972 when he purchased a western saddle at a tack store in the pacific northwest. Right then he became very interested in providing professional quality saddles and tack to top professional western trainers and showmen of the day. This desire led to a full- time job manufacturing and repairing saddles in a shop with his brother Paul White. After selling his shop to his brother, Jim left for Texas in 1981 to start a new venture in saddle making and the rest is history. Jim has applied his experience in training pens and show rings to building equipment that really works for the horse and the rider. In his words, “we build the ridability first and the pretty second”. He takes his knowledge of riding and his knowledge of building a saddle and knows what to listen for when designing a professional quality saddle for trainers making a living in the saddle or competitors enjoying the saddle. Jim Taylor Saddles has worked to bring you a new and exciting era for the reining and working cow horse saddle industry. With the experience of Jim Taylor and the new ideas of the saddlery we will strive to bring you the rideability, consistency and quality you have come to expect in a high quality saddle.

Normal Backs Position 

On this photo one sees very well like the horse back calmly down hangs. Saddles with light swing or a lot of swing will pose the most massive problems to the horse later to lift the back.

Right Backs Position

On this photo one sees very well like the horses back comes up. Thus the horse should assemble later also under the saddle and can take weight on the Hinterhand. “Forward Down” it is supported by the suitable saddle

Shoulder Free Tree

Taylor "shoulders-free" tree. Our 'shoulders free' front bar angle greatly reduces

FG TREE

Designed for Francois Gauthier. Features an 'association' style swell with a quarter horse width gullet. The cantle is 3 ½" tall, with a deep dish. The bars are the 'arlzona' type with our special twist & flare for equal pressure over the entire horse's back. 

DH TREE

Designed for Dell Hendricks. Originally designed as a combination reiner and cutter/ cowhorse tree. The swell is thinner and taller with cutter style bars that lay very flat and close to the horse. This is the same tree as then “KW” exept the horn is shorter reiner style 3” tall and has a flatter seat in front.

KW TREE

Designed for Ken Wold. The swell is thin cutter shape 8" tall with special 'Shoulder Free' cutter bars that are thinner and flatter to sit down on a horse eliminating any 'roll' to the finished saddle. The horn is a special cowhorse style 3 3/4" tall leaned slightly forward and exclusive to all Ken's saddles.

RD TREE

Designed for Rocky Dare. Features Rocky's special swell style and a 4" tall deep dish cantle.

SS TREE

Designed for Steve Schwartzenberger, features a combination of a 'Hoyt' style swell with a wider quarter horse gullet. The cantle is 3 ½" tall with a deep dish. The bars are the 'Vancore' type with our special twist & flare for equal pressure over the horse's entire back. Our 'shoulders free' front bar angle greatly reduces pressure on both sides of the horse's withers above the scapular area. BP TREE Designed for Bub Poplin. This tree has the same bars as all our ‘Shoulder-Free’ Trees. It features a thicker & more ‘Straight-Up’ swell, a 3 ½” tall, deep cantle. It can be ordered with either a regular Reiner horn or a combination Cowhorse- Reiner horn, thinner and more straight up. 3 ½” tall.

AH TREE

Designed for Arno Honstetter. Can be used as a Reiner or Equitation Style saddle. Features a lower rise in the front of the seat, a wider, medium width swell, and can be ordered with a ‘BP’ 3 ½” tall, thin horn, or a 3” tall regular Reiner horn.
